The University of West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus in Barbados not only offers a prominent course in the hospitality profession with close proximity to the beautiful Caribbean Sea, but is also host to an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)-certified 4,000 meter Regupol AG track and high-performance athletic flooring. Installed in 2013, the Regupol AG track features colors from the national flag of Barbados.
The UWI training facility features the Regupol AG track, a water pit for steeplechase, javelin facilities, discus and hammer throwing, long jump, triple job and pole vaulting facilities. Regupol athletic surfaces are used throughout. The shock-absorption properties of the track in particular, have demonstrably decreased the reported number of sports related injuries and the number of athletes qualifying for the University athletic program have tripled.
Before installing the track, UWI participated in on-site testing to determine if the Regupol AG product could withstand the variable weather conditions and tropical climate of the location. Testing confirmed it would not be adversely affected. The athletic training facility was planned and built with on-site supervision by Regupol construction engineers, including the planning and engineering of the track substructure. Additionally, the track was modified slightly to better accommodate wind changes resulting from the seafront venue.
UWI at Cave Hill was established in 1948 and currently counts 9,000 students currently enrolled in University programs.
Regupol AG track is also featured at UWI sister campus, Mona Campus of the University of West Indies, which was Usain Bolt’s, an Olympic Gold Medalist in sprints, training facility.
